  4.     Drought. Floods. Famine. Disease. Civil war. How could the
  5. situation in Sudan get worse? Last week it did, as workers
  6. staged a general strike that closed the airport in Khartoum and
  7. shut down most telephone and telex lines. Rumors of coup
  8. attempts swept the capital as angry demonstrators took to the
  9. streets demanding the head of Prime Minister Sadiq el Mahdi.

  11.     The strike was triggered by sharp government-ordered rises
  12. in the prices of key commodities, including sugar and
  13. cigarettes. To cushion the steep hikes, the government approved
  14. pay raises for both public and private employees, supplementing
  15. incomes by as much as 500%. But the ploy did not work.

  17.     By week's end, as police scattering crowds killed at least
  18. one demonstrator, the government backed down and revoked the
  19. price increases while leaving the pay hikes intact. The swift
  20. reversal does not ensure a return to relative stability. The
  21. Democratic Unionist Party withdrew from Sadiq's coalition
  22. government, and the Prime Minister reportedly intends to form
  23. a new Cabinet with his other partner, the Muslim fundamentalist
  24. National Islamic Front.
